Earth Hour

I joined the Earth Hour effort this evening.   Not that I am totally convinced of Global Warming, but because I am totally convinced that we should not waste the energy.   Use it wisely, that is my motto.

To be honest, I missed the start as I was reading Xanga blogs, hehe.  That is a good excuse, right?  As soon as I realized it was supposed to start at 8:30 p.m. and lasted for an hour, I turned off all the lights in my condo, put my PC to sleep mode, and turned off all electric heaters in the condo.  Then spend the time looking out the window.

Sad to notice that most people in my neighborhood kept their lights on, and there were thousands and thousands of cars on the freeway.  We in US are wasting so much energy, it is a shame.  I also noticed that SF bay area can be a little too cool and wet for me from LA.  The condo was cooling off fast without the electric heaters.  I put  on extra clothing for that hour.

I think the Earth Hour is just a symbolism, I believe in continuing effort to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint.  That is the right thing to do!  I have replaced all my light bulbs in my condo to LED lights, which use only about 10 percent of regular lights.   I am looking into double-pane windows, and replacing the old power hungry refrigerator.  I walk to the nearby shopping mall instead of driving.  I did look into public transportation to work.  But man, that adds two extra hours of commute time each day.  I need to continue to drive to the office, and may be start to look for carpool.

Did you participate in the Earth Hour?  Have you taken any measures lately to reduce energy consumption or carbon footprint?

Yes, Earth Hour is just a symbolic effort in making people aware; people need to be proactive on a daily basis.
Personally, I am a very energy conscious person- I use CFL lights, switch the main power off of the electronic appliances when I am not using them and much more. Energy conservation is something which have been brought to my attention since my childhood, way before the whole global warming issue.

Over the three month stay in the US, I realised that Americans in general do not care about energy issues and wastage. They leave appliances/lights on even when not in use, drive vehicles with high fuel consumption and similar...

i switched off all my lights too (they are all energy saving light bulbs, i dun have a single normal light bulb in my en-suite, even my bathroom light is energy saving bulb - cuz they last longer haha)
my room was sorta pitch black for an hour. i even unplugged my macbook
though i was watching some that hk drama EU's final episode though XD

people often get the wrong impression that switching off lights during this earth hour will conserve energy, i read a facebook group post arguing how untrue that is, cuz power generators are still wasting un-used energy and blah blah blah

but hey i just think of it as a gesture to remind people not to waste it for the rest of the year

@Dezinerdreams - totally agree.  Almost feel like we in USA are "sucking" the life of the whole world's resources and care less.  We need to do better. Action is stronger than words.   You are a good example of what here need to learn from.

@zozoyork - you should have told the restaurant to turn off the light, and use flash to take your food pictures, lol.

Yeah, I turned off everything and went out for a walk. Most of the apts and restaurants in my neighborhood dimmed or turned off their lights. A lot of them had candles lit. I went to a Starbucks and did some reading there while nursing my cold. I was surprised it had lights on.

We participated too on the insistence of my 11 year old son. We switched off all our lights, computers, TV and went out for a walk around the neighbourhood.  It was an hour well spent. But like you said, we were disappointed that most other houses in our estate did not participate.

I was at a restaurant with my friends having dinner and they didn't turn off the light , when I looked out, the street was dark. And of course I switched of all the lights as well as my computer b4 I left my condo :P

@icepearlz - happy to hear that your family turned off the lights,... for that hour.  We have hope since the younger generation are more aware of the importance of conservation.  Kudos to your son.

@Wangium - totally agree

@agmhkg - I did not expect the restaurant to turn off the light, otherwise you will be eating in the dark.  Glad to know that you turned off the light b4 you went out.

@CareyGLY - I stand corrected, may be I should have said, "I am not totally convinced that human is the main cause of global warming".   I know quite a few scientists dispute that human beings cause the recent global warming.  They agree that local warming happens in urban area due to humans, but the sun spots, volcano have significant effects on the global side.  Blessed his heart that El Gore has been doing a great job in asking people to conserve and save the environment.  What I am bothers me is that his own house uses many times more energy than most of us, and he is doped by some scientist with self-serving interest who do not present the whole story, bias in selective data, and his association would ban any opposite opinion. The global temperature slide he shows was composite of temp measurements by very different methods.  It is like comparing apples with oranges, and they did not put a qualifier in his talk.   I assume you turned off the lights, TV and computer for the hour to save the planet, right?. :)

@stevew918 -

i told one of my friends about you staring out of the window in the dark during earth hour and she laughed! she was with me when i went out for dinner on that "Earth Hour" evening. i don't think she can stand doing nothing in the dark other than sleeping. you know what, i think that if i live somewhere where i can see stars in the evening, i would most certainly be sitting in the dark looking out the window and up to the sky.
